Study finds that children of lesbians are better adjusted

Los Angeles-A 24-year study of a group of lesbians found that the 17year old children of the women were better-adjusted than most of their peers.

The latest report from the U.S. National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study, which has been following the same group of women since 1986, found that their adolescent children, all conceived through assisted fertilization, rated higher socially, academically and in overall competence than their peers, while showing lower rates of aggressive behavior, acting out and social problems.

"Our data show that adolescents reared in lesbian parent households are psychologically healthy and highfunctioning," said lead researcher Dr. Nanette Gartrell. "The mothers provided healthy, loving and safe environments where their daughters and sons could grow and thrive."

"We have followed these families since the mothers were inseminating or pregnant, and at each interview, we have been impressed with how well the kids are doing," she continued. “At 17, we find that the kids are well-adjusted and well-equipped for college and beyond."

Man beaten for 'winking,' Marines say

Savannah, Ga.-A gay man was allegedly attacked by two Marines on June 13 who claimed they were being harassed by him and simply wanted to get away.

Witnesses to the assault on 27-yearold Kieran Daly say that Keil Joseph Cronauer, 22, and Christopher Charles Stanzel, 23, got angry when they thought Daly was winking at them, and one of the two Marines punched him in

the back of the head, knocking him unconscious.

A police officer saw the duo, both stationed at Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort, South Carolina, running from the scene before getting a call about the unconscious Daly. He managed to catch up to the two men.

Daly told reporters that he tried to tell the men he was squinting, not winking, because he was very tired. When he tried to walk away, he was attacked.

He was diagnosed with bruises on his brain and suffered two seizures shortly after the attack. He was expected to remain hospitalized for a few days.

The two Marines were booked on battery charges and released to military police.

While Georgia does not have a hate crime law that protects on the basis of sexual orientation, police officials said the case is being watched by the department's LGBT liaison.

Findlay student named Point scholar

Findlay, Ohio-Katie Miller was announced as the recipient of a Point Foundation scholarship for the 20102011 school year.

The Point Foundation awarded 25 scholarships this year to LGBT “students of merit." The organization also provides leadership training and other programs to ensure they are able to pursue their educations despite the marginalization that can occur in a homophobic society.

Miller is pursuing a baccalaureate in sociology at Yale University.

Malawi couple breaks up

Bantyre, Malawi-The gay male couple who was sentenced to 14 years'

hard labor after having a symbolic wedding ceremony split up in the weeks following their pardon by the Malawi president.

Steven Monjeza, 26, claims he is no longer in love with 20-year-old Tiwonge Chimbalanga, with whom he was arrested in December.

Monjeza says he is now heterosexual, and "in love" with a woman named Dorothy Gulo.

Chimbalanga, however, says that Monjeza is terrified of going back to prison, and has been pressured by his family into his current statements.

Peter Tatchell, the British LGBT activist and leader of gay rights group OutRage, said that prison observers brought him messages from the men, who were incarcerated separately, that indicate Chimbalanga is correct.

"In messages passed to me . . . the couple affirmed their love," he told Gay City News' Doug Ireland. "I believe it was genuine affection and commitment."

Student sues school to stop harassment

Surprise, Ariz.-A 15-year old high school student has taken justice into

his own hands, forming an LGBT equality group and pursuing a lawsuit against his school for failing to stop anti-gay harassment.

Caleb Laieski, a student at Willow Canyon High School near Phoenix, founded Gay and Lesbians United Against Discrimination because his district refuses to add sexual orientation and gender identity into its antidiscrimination and anti-harassment policies.

According to Laieski, threats and slurs have been completely ignored by the school's administration.

"The handbook inquires that first offense of hate speech is a 2-3 day suspension and eligibility for a police report to be filed, and they never enforce that," he said. “Additionally, their handbook claims that their staff, both teachers and administrators, are required to intervene, in which they often fail to do."
